Was Oprah Winfrey Right About Black Folks?

I had the good fortune to attend a live taping of the Oprah Winfrey show several years ago and it was loaded with talented speakers like Dr. Michael Eric Dyson, Sistah Souljah, & Chuck D. The show focused on whether Oprah Winfrey was Black enough, since the overwhelming majority of her topics were, and still are, concerned with uplifting the White Supremacy paradigm. This was a show that never reached the airwaves and one of the reasons I feel that it never reached TV broadcast is rooted in the fact that the Black people in the audience hurled insult after insult at Oprah. Some of the insults coming from a few Black folks in the audience claimed that Oprah was struggling to be like her white guests that appeared on her shows. Oprah was not about to back down from the debate and in a moment of anger, after being repeatedly insulted, she stated “…if I had to depend on Black folks, I would be broke!” I was shocked that she would say such a thing in front of a predominantly Caucasian audience, but then I said to myself, “is she right about Black Folks?” Could we be so selfish and confused, as a people, that we don’t support people who look like us? This question weighed heavily on my mind and the more I thought about it, the more I thought that she was correct in her analysis, but wrong in the way she made the statement. The statement was based on a stereotype (which carries some truth), and the probability of Blacks people not supporting each other weighed heavily in her favor when it got down to the psychological damage Afrikan people still endure since coming out of chattel slavery.

The mental state of Black folks will shock you and I have done extensive research that reveals that not only are we not supportive of each other, but we are in danger of losing our lives and the lives of our children because of this character defect. Dr. Amos Wilson addresses this character defect in “Black-on-Black Violence, The Psychodynamics of Black Self-Annihilation in Service of White Domination.” In his book he states that some Black people devalue themselves because they have yet to gain control of their lives due to a white controlled power structure which dominates every facet of their lives. Due to this frustrating existence, Black folks have internalized a death wish and they carry around an enormous amount of self hatred since the world is constantly telling them that they are unlovable.

Of course this devaluation of themselves come from centuries of systematic dehumanization that was born out of chattel slavery. Plus, the slave religion, that has been forced on Afrikan people, keeps far too many of them with a feeling of unworthiness. Many preachers tell Afrikan people about their degraded condition as if the Creator intended it that way every Sunday while filling them with a fantasyland belief to ease their troubled mind. With these fantasyland rejuvenation of the minds of parishioners by using wishful thinking on a weekly basis, many Afrikan people are somehow able to endure more hardships while doing nothing to correct their despicable existence. They feel that something outside of them will correct this mess.

The low self-esteem of far too many Afrikan people is even evident in one radio talk show host named Michael Baisden, who reaffirmed his feeling of unworthiness by advocating a birth control poisons for children in middle school. Who could wish such a thing on his own people if he really cared for them? Does he know the damage the pill does to the female body? I would say apparently not.

With all of these factors in mind, it is my opinion that many Afrikan people still have a lot of unresolved issues that need to be attended to before we learn to unite and support each other in our struggle for freedom. No, Oprah is not alone and she is in good company when it comes to being inculcated with eurocentric values that are destroying us, as a people.

Another clear example of Afrikan self-hatred is the amnesia surrounding the Black Katrina victims (who were referred to as refugees). Many of them haven’t gotten their lives together today and I’ve heard reports of suicides and suicidal behavior among some of the hurricane survivors. This is sad and it sends a clear message to me that this nation is in a rapid decline and nothing can save it. Knowing all of this, I keep wondering can we save ourselves? Is the answer no; like Oprah insinuated in her comment?

Re: Was Oprah Winfrey Right About Black Folks?

I know that by writing this about Oprah, my essay will be comparable to attacking a modern day Jesus with breasts. However, it must be written by someone who is active in our communities and doing all he can to make a change for us. Don't get me wrong, I'm not attacking Oprah, I'm merely exposing certain elements of her mindset that are destructive to people who have more melanin in their body. On the positive note, she has made contributions to several families who suffered from Hurricane Katrina and she appeared on national TV stating "this is not right" when the United States government showed its disdain for people of color during Hurricane Katrina. The outrage she showed while looking at the horrendous conditions within the New Orleans stadium was heartfelt and I think I began to see some of her humanity and altruism come alive. It was shocking to her that Black citizens of this nation could be treated so cruelly because they were poor. When she saw the government's true nature (by neglecting poor Blacks for 5 days in New Orleans) that should have rattled her senses to where we stand, as a people today. But it appears to be all but forgotten. That disaster could have been a sure catalyst and a WAKE-UP CALL to get more people of color uniting together to help our own kind. But as you know, that hasn’t happened. I cringe when I write this because I have a professional relationship with some survivors of Hurricane Katrina. I see them in my office. Some appear undisciplined and confused as ever. They don’t listen to helpful advice and I don’t see many of them later because they don’t believe in doing a follow up exam or taking good care of themselves. I haven’t charged any of them a penny so there is no excuse for this self neglect. Some of them are on a path to self destruction and it will be the results of a deep seated form of self hatred that borders on the belief that they are unworthy of love. When you don’t feel good about yourself, other people (who look like you) are secretly disgusting too. Now how can you support someone that you are disgusted with? Some survivors are right to be infuriated because many people of color have neglected them too. That’s the message I’m getting from some of them. The government may have watched many of their love ones die needlessly, but without government aid, many of them would be homeless or dead.

In regards to Black assistance, some Blacks have taken it on themselves to join the bashing of a downtrodden people and they make excuses for the racist behavior from a historically racist nation by shifting the blame onto Black folks who are downtrodden.

Getting back to the point of this essay, I would say that we shouldn't be surprised at how rich house slaves feel about us. The reason I've stated this is because all throughout history there have been Black people who have stood with us and there have been house slaves that went against us. We, as a people, have some faults but I choose to believe that we are in this bad predicament because this brutal culture has been designed this way. In fact, Frederick Douglass said it best when he stated the following about this nation in 1852:

“What to the American slave is your Fourth of July? I answer, a day that reveals to him more than all other days of the year, the gross injustice and cruelty to which he is the constant victim. To him your celebration is a sham; your boasted liberty an unholy license; your national greatness, swelling vanity; your sounds of rejoicing are empty and heartless; your shouts of liberty and equality, hollow mock; your prayers and hymns, your sermons and thanksgivings, with all your religious parade and solemnity, are to him mere bombast, fraud, deception, impiety, and hypocrisy - a thin veil to cover up crimes which would disgrace a nation of savages. There is not a nation of the earth guilty of practices more shocking and bloody than are the people of these United States at this very hour.”

This nation's shameful past would disgrace a nation full of savages and I agree wholeheartedly with Frederick Douglass in that speech because this nation had approximately 400 years to correct their wrongdoings of the past and today and it has yet to show us justice on the collective level. Correctional Officers can beat a 14 year old child to death on camera and get away with it. White police officers can still shoot Black people down like a dog on impulse today and get away with it and the police incarcerate other Afrikans for just breathing while being Black. Secondly, there is a monstrously evil program in full effect (See Code 666, COINTELPRO, etc.) to criminalize most people of Afrikan descent and this is done because they no longer need Afrikan labor.

They may need trained lapdogs, like Clarence Thomas, who defends this wicked system of brutality but free thinking and conscious Blacks are headed for extinction if something isn't done to stop this onslaught by the police, the prosecutors and the judges. Our children are in danger and many of us may be broke but it is mandatory that we don't give up on ourselves. Just because we have lost the support of people with big money like Bill Cosby and Oprah is no reason to give up our drive for freedom. Oprah may have a point that we don’t support one another, but when she continues to identify with people who oppresses us on a daily basis and she still remains enamored with their way of life, we can see that she would rather be with them than be with people who look like her ancestors.

There is nothing wrong with making money in a clever way, but after living in the Chicago area most of my life, I know that Oprah is actually a minority front for whitefolks. She pumps all of their slanted information into our homes. That includes, HPV vaccines for young girls (which can kill them, sterilize them or make them awfully sick) and she is constantly putting down the Black male since she had difficulty with men in her life. Before Max Robinson died of AIDS, I watched her totally disrespect him on national TV by saying that he didn't know what he was talking about (He was talking about institutional racism). Her TV personality has most AmeriKKKans fooled, but I don't buy that false image that she projects because I have a long memory of the things she has done that would put her in the loyal flunky for whitefolks category.

I want to say this twice! Oprah will hype a racist ex-cop but says she will never allow O.J. Simpson on her show.

This Brother (Dr. Dyson), Who I met on Oprah’s Show, Can Write and Speak Well But The European Collective Has Deaf Ears and Minds That Are Dutifully Blind. Therefore, teaching most of them is a proven waste of time.
