When Rosa Lee Ingram and her two sons received the death penalty in 1948 for murdering a white landowner in rural Georgia, civil rights activists from across the nation rushed to her defense. The Ingram case represented an example of the emerging Cold War politics of racial protest and helped trigger local challenges to Jim Crow in the southwest corner of Georgia.
In November 1947, Ingram was working on the land she sharecropped near the small town of Ellaville, Georgia when John Stratford, a white neighbor, angrily confronted her about some livestock that had roamed onto his property. Later testimony suggested that Stratford threatened Ingram sexually. As Rosa Lee Ingram fought Stratford off, sixteen-year-old Wallace Ingram and fourteen-year-old Sammie Lee Ingram came to her defense with farm implements. Stratford died from several blows to the head and local authorities soon charged the three Ingrams with murder. A one-day trial with an all-white jury resulted in death sentences for the three, while a fourth son, Charles, was acquitted in a separate trial due to lack of evidence.
The Ingram case received national press attention during the post-World War II era when the southern justice system and Jim Crow itself were under new scrutiny. Members of the Atlanta chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) rushed down to appeal the verdict, providing support to local white lawyer appointed to the case, S. Hawkins Dykes. The Civil Rights Congress (CRC), a left-based organization, also became involved in raising funds for the Ingrams and publicizing their cause but also generating tensions with the NAACP which harkened back to the political splits seen in the Scottsboro cases of the 1930s. When the Ingrams appealed in 1948, Georgia courts reduced the death sentences to life imprisonment but refused to take further action. The NAACP and the CRC’s formal protests thus increasingly stalled due to both strategy conflicts and the continuing power of the southern legal system.
At this point, female activists emerged as a critical political voice on behalf of Rosa Lee Ingram and her sons, often working across traditional alliances of race and class. For example, the CRC supported the creation of the National Committee to Free the Ingram Family which was headed by Mary Church Terrell, long a leader of the black women’s club movement. This group petitioned the United Nations to address the Ingram case as both a matter of human rights and women’s rights. Other groups such as the Sojourners for Truth and Justice linked the Ingram case to the failures of the southern legal system, calling upon President Harry Truman to take action.
These women’s organizations helped to keep the story of the Ingram family alive in the press into the 1950s. The Ingrams were finally released on parole in 1959 after having been judged to be “model prisoners.” The activism surrounding the case revealed real tensions over leadership and left-based politics but it also demonstrated women’s efforts to highlight gendered critiques of Jim Crow.

First, it gathers the community in a ritual that affirms racial divisions, and second, it stages scenes of extreme violence. Have you ever had dreams that were so powerful that you can't forget them? I know I have and usually my dreams are a warning for myself and my family. One of the most powerful dreams came to me when I was 18 years of age. I was sleeping on a ship off the coast of Vietnam. This dream showed my throat being cut and I left my body and was floating above my body. I could see myself lying in a puddle of blood that was spurting from neck like a fountain. There was no one around me and I was left alone on the rear of the ship in this dream. As I floated further and further away from my body, I woke up. I was sweating profusely and I told my best friend that we were going to be attacked that night. He looked at me and laughed and said, "how do you know that?" I told him that I had a powerful dream and this was like no other dream that I ever had before. He was skeptical and said, "oh, I'm suppose to believe your dreams too!" I told him to forget I ever told him that because he was a skeptic by nature. But he didn't forget it. He was a talkative person and by noon everyone in our division (on the ship) knew. They were coming up to me laughing and saying things like, "are you the Prophet? Can you tell me my future?" I had to ignore these kinds of comments all day and I promised myself that I wouldn't tell my best friend about anything else. He was a blabbermouth! But that turned out to be good.
That night, while I was standing the midnight watch, on the rear of the ship, we ran into another ship. I had remained fully alert and I kept my 45 automatic pistol ready for firing. There were enemy soldiers climbing onboard our ship with knives in their mouths and general quarters was sounded. All hands were ordered to man their battle stations. I remembered my vision from my dream and I was doing everything to make sure that this dream didn't come true. Afterwards, we took prisoners, and put them in the brig (a temporary place of confinement) onboard the ship. My friend came up to me and said: "Man you predicted this!" All I could say was "I'm glad you told everybody." We didn't lose any lives on the U.S. side. But, it wasn't over yet, because the worse was yet to come.
Later that day, we pulled into a harbor for a survey of the damages. That was a big mistake! The reason I write that is because snipers were waiting for us and soldiers were coming out of the water from all sides of the ship. I was running in an erratic manner so I wouldn't get picked off by a sniper's bullet. I alerted the crew and we became battle station ready again. This time we weren't so lucky and there were casualties.
After all of this occurred and we resolved the problem onboard ship, people began to look at me differently. My ability to see things before they happen spread throughout the ship and MOST people were incredibly kind to me. It was a strange feeling because I was use to people ignoring me.
When we got back to the U.S., I was given several medals (one being a bronze star) for valor. It was a classified mission so I wasn't allowed to discuss the events with anybody. Even today, I don't go into specifics.
Naturally, there are people who will not believe this story, but it is absolutely true! Could you believe that after all I did for this country (by saving many lives), it still betrays a law-abiding citizen like me?
As a young spiritual child who went hungry because of extreme poverty, I tried to see as much good in the world as I could imagine. With every smile from a passing stranger, I would say to myself that the world was basically filled with good people who wanted to live life in peace and harmony. This type of thinking led to confusion because I discovered that a monstrous evil existed in certain portions of my world and I use to pray every second of every minute while I walked through this world on my way to school each day. There were young men living in my neighborhood that were filled with hate and it appeared that they were victims of parental neglect. They would see me walking and see an opportunity to vent their self-hatred onto me. But being as small as I was, I could outrun almost anyone when I was really scared. If I had eaten breakfast and finished it off with an apple, I was even more uncatchable. As poor as I was, I’ve always wondered what the hell could these guys want from me and why the creator allowed these things to happen to me?
I have wondered many times why the almighty creator put me on this earth. During these difficult and somewhat depressing times, I have come up with the answer. I was put here because I have a mission in life that fits into the creator's plan. That plan consists of making the world aware that it is on a self-destructive course. A course so deadly and so pervasive that most of the world’s population is on a journey of no return. I say a journey of no return because the human condition is worse than it has ever been in this world. We have children killing other children. Parents abusing children. Childcare agencies neglecting children. Institutions exposing children to adult monsters that rape, and rob them of their innocence. In essence, all these tragedies as noted above are planting the seeds of destruction into our children's fragile minds. Rebellious youths have many good reasons to destroy the very culture that made them because American culture doesn’t value every human life. In addition it must be mentioned that anyone with an honest outlook on life will know that a culture that exists for the benefit of a select few (the rich) is destined for failure.
This is a culture that believes that people of color are inferior when all evidence contradicts this belief. This culture has told so many lies about us that it has dug itself into a psychopathological trap that is being manifested in their racist offspring. The Columbine School shooting in Colorado and other racist killings are evidence of this sick and self-defeating trap; a trap that will create a new breed of uncontrollable demons of destruction.
There is a prophetic saying that the fruit doesn’t fall far from its tree and the attitude of our present day murderers in schools, workplaces, homes, and other places prove that injustice and greed have given birth to new monsters of American society. These hate-filled creatures control the media, corporations, government agencies, courts, schools and politics in general. They dwell on racist stereotypes to fuel the fire of racial hatred and they could care less about most of the people who inhabits this land. There is ample evidence that these demons of destruction also feel that the people of color are inferior. The Katrina hurricane survivors' catastrophe, which is still ongoing, proves that point very clearly.
The purpose of this short article is to alert the African-American (aka Afrikan) to the tactics of the controlling culture vultures and reveal traditional habits of these oppressors. White supremacy, a culture out for blood, is a system that feeds off the psychosis of the EVIL, FEARFUL, RACIST and GREEDY mind. This sick systematic setup would be nothing without the pompous manipulation of feeble minds that crave material wealth. Therefore, today, in this era of the unconscious, myopic and feeble minds, the Afrikan has been put under the spell of materialism. In America you are nothing if you don't own property. With this spell of material possessions comes a despiritualization that degrades the human condition because materials (aka personal property) has become more important than a human life. This attitude is what promotes selfishness, mistrust, and greed. All of the aforementioned attitudinal disorders creates jealousy, hatred and violence. These factors feed white supremacy.
Every since the inception of Afrikan slavery, Europeans have been manipulating the mind of the Black man and woman to the point that many of us have become generic human beings. We have lost our spirituality, our civilization, the proper nutritional customs, our history and our sense of community. What is the cause of this mental setback? First, we have accepted technology as a substitute for social progress. Secondly, when we began to equate material possessions as a symbol for success and we put sophisticated technology in control of many aspects of our lives. Finally, cultural traditions, such as extended family, a support system for our poor, elderly, handicap, and the wayward youth have lost their importance to many of us. Bottom line: We allowed western traditions/thoughts to create deficiencies in our community and it has engendered the disintegration of the family, the community, and this nation.
DIVIDE AND CONQUER STRATEGY.
